Realistic Fruit: An Introduction to Botanical Art
in Watercolours
with Rosalie Williams

An example of Rosalie’s work

June 12th 2010
9.30 to 2.30 pm

Rosalie Williams is a professional artist who has been painting
for over twenty years. Growing up on the family farm at Pukerau
in Southland, NZ, Rosalie developed a love of native flora and fauna
which is evident in her work. She loves the way acrylics lend themselves
to bringing out the colour and subdued tones of our native plants,
and has enjoyed learning the art of Botanical Painting from her tutor,
Connie Robinson.

Rosalie has exhibited her work in NZ and overseas, and also sells
her work online. She had winning entries in our
Fruit Painting competition last year.

This will be an informative workshop, introducing us to the techniques
and materials used in Botanical Art. Through demonstration and
practical exercises, Rosalie will teach us how to build up colour
and depth, layer by layer. Using a picture as a guide or a real piece of fruit
or vegetable, we will paint a small design suitable for use on a card.

This introductory workshop will lead on to Connie Robinson’s
workshop in August.

Cost
$50.00 which includes watercolour papers and paint

Three Exciting Workshops in October
with Visiting Australian Artist Karen Brouwer

Known as the ‘Mother of Pearl Queen’ for her expert use of this beautiful
shell in her work, Karen has previously taught many enjoyable workshops throughout NZ. She is in hot demand worldwide for her unique classes, and
is booked to teach early next year at the huge Las Vegas painting convention.
This October, Karen will be teaching three wonderful projects for us.

Friday 1st October
6.30pm to 9.30pm

Domino Necklaces/Brooches

This is a relaxed and fun workshop and is a great way to ease into the weekend.
These delightful little trinkets are a snap to make and are wonderful gifts. Karen’s simple designs are painted onto cream coloured, clay dominoes
(5cm x 2cm) which have Mother of Pearl applied to one side.
The lovely shell is gently ‘rouged’ with a blush of colour, before the design is painted on. The real Mother of Pearl shell comes in sheets and is self adhesive, ready to cut, peel and stick, with many of the smaller shapes Karen uses already pre-cut.

In this class you will receive patterns for all the different designs, with the Butterfly, Dragonfly, Wild Rose, Pansy, Rosebud and Hydrangea being the most popular. Although small, these dominoes are easy and not fiddly to paint and are fine for beginners.
You can expect to finish 4 to 8 of these during the three hour workshop.

Cost
$30
plus $30 for the kit containing 6 Dominoes, Mother of Pearl shell and patterns

Saturday 2nd October
 9.30am to 4pm

Japanese Lady with Fan and Wisterias / Wisteria Blossom & Butterfly

If you like Mother of Pearl and Oriental designs, this class is not to be missed.
Karen will teach both of these fabulous projects during this workshop.
The little Mother of Pearl and Paua blossoms and petals are all pre-cut, ready to peel & stick, so we can relax and have more time for painting!

The ‘ Japanese Lady with Fan and Wisterias’ is a simple workshop and a wonderful piece to learn a variety of techniques, as it includes both the Wisterias and the lady.  Karen will show us how to handle Mother of Pearl shell, including how cut larger shapes such as the fan, as well as using paint to ‘rouge’ the shell. We will learn how to paint a face, as well as simple leaves.
The butterfly in ‘Wisteria Blossom and Butterfly’
is cut from gold abalone shell. This piece has been painted on canvas, although both designs may be painted on a suitable flat surface of your choice.

Cost
$65 plus Mother of Pearl shell & wood piece for the’ Japanese Lady with Fan’
or supply own canvas for ‘Wisteria Blossom & Butterfly’.

Sunday 3rd October
 9.30am to 4pm

Lilium

This is another wonderful project full of exciting and versatile techniques.
The design is textured to give a 3D effect, painted in acrylics and then glazed with water soluble oil. This example has been glazed in earth tones which are very fashionable in Australia at present, although it can be painted in other colours if preferred.

This example is painted on a 60 x 30cm canvas, although the design can be reduced if desired.

This workshop would be suitable for beginner to intermediate level painters.
